executing shell script when screensaver start / stop?

Is it possible to execute shell scripts when the screensaver starts / stops?

The plan is to send commands to my TV's serial interface to let it enter energy saver mode, when the screensaver kicks in.

I do not know whether or not it is possible. As I have been attempting to teach my two boys to turn things off when they are done, I have not been searching for automation that would do it for them.
MiniMyth running on an Acer ApireRevo 3610 and a Zotac ZBOX-ID80-U. Find out more at my MythTV page.
