"no more processes left in this runlevel"

Post by rsdvd » Thu Feb 22, 2007 4:28 pm

Hi All

In my quest to get minimyth to work in this Set-Top Box, I have now managed to build gar-minimyth and also get etherboot to boot it across the network :-)

but minimyth stops with "no more processes left in this runlevel".

I can telnet into the machine and there is nothing obvious in /var/log/messages.

Can anyone suggest where to start looking?

thanks in advance

Phil

EDIT:
I have been working on this - and I know it is Xorg that is failing to start.

"(EE) I810(0): No Video BIOS modes for chosen depth.
(EE) Screen(s) found, but none have a usable configuration.

Fatal server error:
no screens found"

but I do not know enough about Xorg.conf to be able to fihure out what the correct values should be.

If you make the /var/log/Xorg.0.log file available for download, I can look at it and see whether I can figure out what should be changed.

Hi Pablo

Thanks for your assistance, I think I am getting near to having a working minimyth install on this S100 STB :-)

Looking in Xorg.0.log the CRT is being used and the following display configurations are available:

Code: Select all

     Subsection "Display"
         Depth 8
         ViewPort 0 0
         Modes "640x480" "640x400" "800x600" "1024x768" "1024x600" "1280x1024" "1600x1200" "1920x1440"
     EndSubsection

     Subsection "Display"
         Depth 15
         ViewPort 0 0
         Modes "640x480" "800x600" "1024x768" "1024x600" "1280x1024" "1600x1200" "1920x1440"
     EndSubsection

     Subsection "Display"
         Depth 16
         ViewPort 0 0
         Modes "640x480" "800x600" "1024x768" "1024x600" "1280x1024" "1600x1200" "1920x1440"
     EndSubsection

     Subsection "Display"
         Depth 24
         ViewPort 0 0
         Modes "640x480" "800x600" "1024x768" "1024x600" "1280x1024" "1600x1200" "1920x1440"
     EndSubsection
Looking in xorg.conf the following display configuration is being requested:

Code: Select all

     Subsection "Display"
         Depth 24
         ViewPort 0 0
         Modes "720x576"
     EndSubsection
In addition, xorg.conf is limiting the vertical refresh to the range 49.0-51. I suspect that reason for the xorg.conf configuration is that it was originally generated by MiniMyth with only MM_X_TV_TYPE='PAL' set in minimyth.conf. Based on the 'PAL' value, MiniMyth defaults, the vertical refresh range to 50Hz +/- 1Hz and the resolution to 720x576. Unforunately, these values do not align with the available display configurations.

I suggest that you change the diplay section in xorg.conf to

Code: Select all

     Subsection "Display"
         Depth 24
         ViewPort 0 0
         Modes "800x600"
     EndSubsection
and change the vertical refresh to

Code: Select all

     VertRefresh 49.0-61.0
The change in vertical refresh will allow modes at both 50Hz and 60Hz, which should cover most monitors.

thanks for continued help!

I have now managed to move past this, and at one point I had minmyth starting using the ram-minimyth method.

I have now done somthing and Xorg will not start and does with an error :

(EE) Failed to load module "shadow" (module does not exist, 0)

but I cannot seem to find any where that tries to load it.

If you could help me out agian, I woudl appreciate it

thanks

It appears that i810_drv.so loads libshadow.so when an i830 (or above) is the primary screen. I suggest that you add

Code: Select all

mm_USER_LIB_LIST+=xorg/modules/libshadow.so
to you minimyth.conf.mk file for now and I will add it to the minimyth-lib-list.intel file with the next SVN commit.

Hi Pablo

I added that line to the minimyth.conf.mk and then did a make clean && make build

Now the system Kernel Panics with "Could not load /lib/modules/2.6.19.2/modules.dep : not such file or directory"

Any ideas?

I am confused. The Xorg.0.log that you posted says that the system is using the 2.6.17.14 kernel, but the kernel used to boot during the kernel panic is 2.6.19.2. Also, it is has been a little while since the 2.6.19.2 kernel was an option, and I do not think that it was an option in the same build system that has the released Xorg 7.2. Are you sure that you are booting with the correct kernel?

Hi

I am also confused - as this bxo nativly runs 2.6.18....so it must have come from the gar.

The version of gar-minimyth I checked out a few weeks ago does have a 2.6.19.2 lib directory.

I am away for the weekend - but I might try a clean snv checkout and a rebuild when I get back.

Thanks

Pablo

I checked out the latest SVN version o fgar-minimyth and rebuild everything overnight, and it ow works :-)

I have minimyth network booting and running happily on the S100 Set-top Box.

The only hurdle left is getting the scrart socket working through Xorg so I can output to a TV instead of just the VGA to a monitor.

If you have any pointers on gettinght fs454 chip working to control the scrart - I would appreciate them.

Thanks for all your help so far, and for the brilliant minimyth distro.

I do not have any answer on the fs454. However, I believe is used in some Xbox revisions, so you might check out the Linux on Xbox community.
