HD w/ intel DG45ID almost works

I am attempting to get an intel DG45ID to work PXE booting, using the DVI output.

If I do not specify MM_X_MODE it boots up in 800 x 640 resolution I think, but if I specify 1920 x 1080, and boot, X never comes up.

This motherboard for some reason will not drive my TV during bios or bootup, not until X comes up does it drive the TV. I can put a VGA card ( motherboard has no VGA ) in and see the boot process, but with the VGA installed the DVI does not come up at all even without the MM_X_MODE setting. This makes it a bit difficult to diagnose.

I am using a DVI to HDMI converter cable. I don't know enough to know what to try next, any suggestions for diagnosing this? When the video comes up trough the DVI it looks nice, but the resolution is low.

Xorg.0.0.log

I wanted to post my Xorg.0.0.log.

I have tested my HD TV in 1080p (non myth source) with the same DVI to HDMI cable and it works fine.

If I do not specify the MM_X_MODE, then X starts and looks good. It comes up at 800x600 however

If I specify MM_X_MODE='1920x1080' I don't get a signal, and I get the following Xorg.0.0.log. Not sure where to turn next...

I suspect you will need to create a custom xorg.conf file. You can do this by modifying the generated /etc/X11/xorg.conf file and restarting X using

Once you have one that works copy it and use minimyth.conf to tell MiniMyth to fetch it from you MiniMyth configuration directory.

First, it appears that xf86-video-intel identifies your Monitor type is HDMI rather than TMDS. While this is a good thing, the MiniMyth init script does not support it. Therefore, you will want to change it to Monitor-TMDS to Monitor-HDMI.

Second, it might be best to comment out HorizSync and VertRefresh as these may be causing X to reject detected mode lines.

getting closer

I feel like I am getting close to my HD goals here:

* per Pablo's excellent suggestions, I stopped x, modified xorg.conf, changing the Monitor-TMDS to Monitor-HDMI, remove the HorizSync and VertRefresh, changed the resolution to 1920x1080 and restarted x, and presto 1080p!

However:

- the Minimty GUI comes up small in the upper right corner of the screen.Playing dvds also comes up small in the upper left hand corner.

- the Settings -> Appearance configuration will not let me specify resolutions larger than 1280 x 1024 in the "seperate gui and video" sections.

Then I somehow failed to put the modified xorg.conf in the correct place. Where does it go on the backend please? Will this fix the small GUI problem or is this something else?

Any X configuration info anyone can give me would be very very welcome because I just know enough about X to be dangerous! Stop me before I crash again....

With drivers separating non-HDMI digital from HDMI digital, I believe it makes sense to add a variable MM_X_OUTPUT_HDMI. Using this variable should fix your Monitor-TMDS versus Monitor HDMI problem.

It is odd that either HorizSync or VertRefresh would cause a proble, where the display to support the standard HDTV mode lines. At any rate, MiniMyth has MM_X_SYNC and MM_X_REFRESH, so once you have MM_X_OUTPUT_HDMI, you should be able to set MM_X_SYNC and MM_X_REFRESH so that it works as well as your current custom xorg.conf.
However:

This should be primarily the result of the xorg.conf DisplaySize parameter (which should override the and dimensions returned by your display so the fonts are ~100dpi). Did you let MiniMyth generate the original xorg.og with 640x480 or 1920x1020?

You need to put xorg.conf in your read-only MiniMyth configuration directory and you need to add MM_X_FETCH_XORG_CONF='yes' to your minimyth.conf.

I will test 66b8 shortly, but I believe it will not fix my problem. Yes? Here is what I am seeing:


- First off after re-reading your post Pablo I went back and tested the HorizSync and VertRefresh stuff and as you suspected these didn't really break anything. I must have been confused, I put them back in my Xorg.conf

- in desperation I went back to the 64 released build. This also had no effect.

- I got the xorg fetch stuff working fine ( Thanks again ).

My symptoms are:

X comes up 1920x1080 but the MM GUI comes up in 1600x1024. I did something to change this from 800x600, but I have no idea what I did, it does not seem to be in xorg.conf, or at least changing DisplaySize randomly does not seem to do anything. I don't understand what to do with display size. I have a feeling this is the problem but how to fix?

I created by xorg.conf file by booting with MM_X_MODE not specified. When I do that it comes up in 800x600. I took this xorg.conf, change the monitor to HDMI, and changed the 'Modes' and 'Virtual lines' to be 1920x1080 and 1920 1080 respectively.

Do you have the VGA port connected?

Whether or not you do, Xorg thinks you do and is using the resolution 1600x1024. It is possible that this is the reason that the GUI is 1600x1024.

If you have the VGA port connected, then try disconnecting it and see whether or not the GUI is the correct size. Alternatively, you can add something like

    Identifier      "VGA"
    Option "Ignore" "true"

to your xorg.conf file.

Also, according to the log, it is not using the monitor section of the HDMI output. It appears that Xorg thinks the HDMI output is HDMI-2 not HDMI. If you change

Option "Monitor-HDMI" Monitor1
to

Code: Select all

Option "Monitor-HDMI-2" Monitor1
then I suspect that it will use the monitor section. Of course, this will likely break things for you as now the refresh rate will come into play.

Sounds like I have some work when I get home. Thanks for keeping my moving forward. I'll try it out. Here are the facts:

* this motherboard does not have any VGA whatsoever.
* this motherboard does have 1 HDMI and 1 DVI connector. I am connected to the DVI connector with an HDMI to DVI converter cable.

Previously I did have a VGA card plugged in to debug boot, it is possible the xorg.conf got created with that card in, but it is no longer in the machine....

I took a different tack and went out and bought a HDMI cable. With the HDMI to HDMI cable, I get 1080p without custom xorg.conf file, ( no sound yet ).

Also I can see the bios and boot sequence before X comes up which is nice. Anyone trying to get a DG45ID or any other G45 based intel motherboard with 1 DVI and 1 HDMI may be interested... Forget about the DVI try HDMI to HDMI.

So I am running with:

MM_X_OUTPUT_DVI='auto'
MM_X_MODE='1920x1080'
MM_X_OUTPUT_VGA='none'

nothing custom, build 21.0.64.

So I am quite happy until I try and use the remote. When I try and skip forward ( not the channel control but the >| control ) a few times X freezes. I can get X to freeze other ways as well, just adjusting the volume with the remote. Any idea how to diagnose this?

Also what about the HDMI audio, how do I turn that on?

I did test 66b8, and I noticed 2 problems:

#1 - with MM_X_OUTPUT_HDMI='auto', there is an error message: MM_X_OUPUT_TV,VGA,etc... not specified, but it boots anyway

#2 - the xorg.conf that gets created has:

Section "Device"
Identifier "Device_intel_810"
Driver "intel"
Option "XvMCSurfaces" "7"
Option "XvPreferOverlay" "true"

Option "Monitor-HDMI" "Monitor1"
EndSection

Section "Device"
Identifier "Device_intel_915"
Driver "intel"
Option "XvPreferOverlay" "true"

Option "Monitor-HDMI" "Monitor1"
EndSection


So the monitor settings do not take. I need to still hand edit it to be:

... "Monitor-HDMI-1" "Monitor1"


Then it properly does not work, then I can comment out the refresh rates in the "Monitor1" and then it does work.

However I am still having X issues. I will formulate my post in general later.

Yes. I ran into this soon after uploading the last test version. Hopefully, it is fixed now in SVN. The changes expected to fix it will be in the next test build.
