Problems booting ram-minimyth-0.22.0-72

Post by umbongo » Fri Nov 27, 2009 2:50 pm

The short story. My SP8000 is not successfully running ram-minimyth-0.22.0-72. After I great deal of proding I've reach a stage where I get right through the booting process and then just get a blank screen. When I telnet onto the frontend and inspect /var/log/messages the last few lines are as follows

Code: Select all

Can anybody shed any light on what may be causing the timeout issue mentioned towards the end of the log? Given that minimyth has already connected to the database to check schema versions etc it seems unlikely that I've got the IPaddress of the master server wrong in minimyth.conf and I can get onto the database and run queries using the mysql command line interface (admittedly from the server I haven't tried the frontend). I'm also a bit concerned re the 1280 x 720 0Hz mentioned towards the top of my extract. (I'm using a DVI daughterboard in the SP8000 to output to a HDMI television just in case thats important)

The longer story / background . . . I've been running various versions of minimyth for years against a mythbackend on an old Slackware 10 box. When the disk with the root filesystem of the Slackware box began to go bad I ignored it until it failed (oops). I then decided that instead of going through the pain of obtaining and compiling all the libraries I need to compile Myth on Slackware (might be better in newer releases?) I'd take the easy route so I replaced the disk and slapped Ubunto 9.04 onto the machine and downloaded the Myth Package using synaptic. . . I had all manner of bother with ubuntu 9.04 (I thought it was supposed to be easier than Slackware but getting tftp to go was a nightmare), anyway we had some issues with the Myth on the Ubuntu box amongst other things and ended up doing a dist upgrade to ubuntu 9.10 which helpfully did a silent reconfigure of samba for me and bumped Myth to 0.22. Hence I've ended up downloading the current stable minimyth in order to be compatible with my new backend versions, but I don't seem to be able to make it work.

Check that mythbackend is actually running. You can get the timeout message if it is not. It could also be caused by a firewall. Test with firewall switched off (as root type "service iptables stop"). It is also possible that somehow the port number (that is used with the mythtv protocol) is not correct anymore in the database.

You need to allow remote access to your mysql database and configure a non-local address for your backen (using mythtv-setup) in order to support remote frontends: mysql remote access and backend address. If you have not done this, then you might give it a try and see whether or not it helps.

The backend is running I can run mythfrontend on it and watch tv perfectly.

It's unlikely a firewall issue otherwise why would it happily query the db earlier in the process to determine schema versions for mythmusic etc.

I ran the GRANT suggested on the myth pages. . . no better.

However I think I've made a step forwards in that I've discovered I have two independent issues to fix, if I plug a monito into the frontend machine I get a display and can see the frontend menu system etc. The TV via a DVI to HDMI lead however refuses to show the mythfrontend app, but shows the splash screen and progress bar etc. I think the answer to this probably lies in xorg.conf. I'd like to get the display going again before I worry too much about the DB which I'm fairly sure will be trivial to fix.
I'm fairly sure this is the problem

Code: Select all

Dec 6 09:13:52 (none) local0.info mythfrontend: 2009-12-06 09:13:52.143 Desktop video mode: 1280x720 60.3173 Hz
Dec 6 09:13:52 (none) local0.info mythfrontend: 2009-12-06 09:13:52.202 Trying 1280x720 0 Hz
Dec 6 09:13:52 (none) local0.info mythfrontend: 2009-12-06 09:13:52.205 SwitchToGUI: Switched to 1280x720 0 Hz
0Hz cannot be right, I'll do some reading re modelines!

Success using the following modeline (Probably only useful if you have a Toshiba Regza CX3030 television connected via DVI - HDMI)

Code: Select all

MM_X_MODELINE='Modeline "640x480x59.9" 25.18  640 656 752 800  480 490 492 525'
.

Connection to backend fixed too (opened port 6543 it was firewall related afterall)

Now I just need to sort out the jerky playback probably due to approaching 100% CPU utilisation on the epia.
