Old sound chip issue.

Post by wankykootiepooper » Sun Jan 03, 2010 10:09 pm

I'm trying to get an old IBM NetVista P4 running. So far, the results are much better than I had expected. I scrounged an NVIDIA 5200 with an SVIDEO out from a used computer store, and the older NV driver minimyth works (almost) perfectly, right down to the serial port supporting LIRC.

My only challenge is getting the sound to work. The sound chip is a (lspci):

00:1f.5 Multimedia audio controller: Intel Corporation 82801BA/BAM AC'97 Audio Controller (rev 12)

The config lines I'm using in minimyth.conf (audio section) are:

MM_AUDIO_TYPE='digital'
MM_AUDIO_CARD_NUMBER='0'
MM_AUDIO_GAIN='90'

This provides only one error reported in /var/log/messages re audio, which is:

Jan 3 13:51:16 (none) local0.warn minimyth: 'unknown audio device. assuming audio device number is '0'

Regardless of how I fiddle with the settings, this always show up in this log. Here are my LSPCI and LSUSB outs:

00:00.0 "0600" "8086" "1a30" -r03 "" ""
00:01.0 "0604" "8086" "1a31" -r03 "" ""

Bus 002 Device 001: ID 1d6b:0001 Linux Foundation 1.1 root hub

Once the Minimyth client has finished booting, I can get audio working properly by going into it via telnet as root and running:

amixer -c '0'
amixer set "PCM" on
amixer set "Headphone" on
amixer set "PCM" 100
amixer set "Headphone" 100

I did this because by running amixer without any parameters on bootup shows the PCM and Headphone devices are muted:

root@mythtv199:~ # amixer -c 0
Simple mixer control 'Headphone',0
Capabilities: pvolume pswitch pswitch-joined
Playback channels: Front Left - Front Right
Limits: Playback 0 - 31
Mono:
Front Left: Playback 0 [0%] [-46.50dB] [off]
Front Right: Playback 0 [0%] [-46.50dB] [off]
Simple mixer control 'PCM',0
Capabilities: pvolume pswitch pswitch-joined
Playback channels: Front Left - Front Right
Limits: Playback 0 - 31
Mono:
Front Left: Playback 0 [0%] [-34.50dB] [off]
Front Right: Playback 0 [0%] [-34.50dB] [off]
Simple mixer control 'Line',0

Thanks for any help.

ps. I can't even begin to tell you how impressed I am that I've even made it this far with a 2001 box...

All,

Fixed this using asound.state configuration parameter in minimyth.conf.

This old IBM now boots and just works.

Thanks.
