Problems starting X and loading i915 module

Post by daveed » Thu Sep 16, 2010 7:48 pm

Hi,

I'm having problems getting minimyth running (version 0.23.1-73)

I'm booting over the network, using an NFS share for the rootfs. The blue screen with the progress bar goes all the way to the end - at which point, when it tries to start X, I get a black screen with a flashing cursor (top left).

This lead me to believe that it was X which was failing...

At the end of my /var/log/Xorg.0.0.log is the following.

Code: Select all

(EE) intel(0): No kernel modesetting driver detected.
(II) UnloadModule: "intel"
(EE) Screen(s) found, but none have a usable configuration.
On Googling based on this log, I get lots of pages suggesting that I should enable the modesetting
using i915.modesetting=1 - so I've added this to my append line in my pxeconfig file. Still no luck. However, I also read in the changelog for minimyth that it's now turned on by default, so maybe it's not this.

"lsmod" gives

Code: Select all

Module Size Used by
uinput 4605 0
snd_intel8x0 19741 0

rtc 3986 0
af_packet 13182 0
unionfs 57801 1
So, i915 isn't loaded (I'm of course guessing it should be!)

"modprobe i915" gives

Code: Select all

WARNING: Error inserting i2c_core (/lib/modules/2.6.34.3/kernel/drivers/i2c/i2c-core.ko): No such device
WARNING: Error inserting button (/lib/modules/2.6.34.3/kernel/drivers/acpi/button.ko): No such device
WARNING: Error inserting i2c_algo_bit (/lib/modules/2.6.34.3/kernel/drivers/i2c/algos/i2c-algo-bit.ko): No such device

FATAL: Error inserting i915 (/lib/modules/2.6.34.3/kernel/drivers/gpu/drm/i915/i915.ko): No such device
You'll notice that some of the modules that complain about devices not being present are listed in the output from lsmod! So, I modprobed the failed modules one by one:

Code: Select all

root@minimyth:/var/log # modprobe i2c_core
root@minimyth:/var/log # modprobe button
FATAL: Error inserting button (/lib/modules/2.6.34.3/kernel/drivers/acpi/button.ko): No such device
root@minimyth:/var/log # modprobe i2c_algo_bit
root@minimyth:/var/log # modprobe agpgart
root@minimyth:/var/log # modprobe drm
root@minimyth:/var/log # modprobe drm_kms_helper
root@minimyth:/var/log # modprobe intel_agp
So, only the button one seems to be failing here. Which is something to do with ACPI. I've tried booting with the boot option of acpi=off and that doesn't make any difference. So, I'm now at a loss at to what it could be!

Just in case, here's what I think is the relevant section of an output of lspci -v

Code: Select all

00:02.0 VGA compatible controller: Intel Corporation 82852/855GM Integrated Graphics Device (rev 02) (prog-if 00 [VGA controller])
Subsystem: Intel Corporation 82852/855GM Integrated Graphics Device
Flags: bus master, fast devsel, latency 0, IRQ 10
        Memory at d8000000 (32-bit, prefetchable) [size=128M]
        Memory at e8180000 (32-bit, non-prefetchable) [size=512K]
        I/O ports at e200 [size=8]
        Expansion ROM at <unassigned> [disabled]
Capabilities: [d0] Power Management version 1
        Kernel modules: i915
Sorry it's quite a long post, but I thought best to document what I've tried to save covering the same bases again!

Has anyone got any ideas?

It could be that Kernel Mode Setting is not working for your hardware. Does adding

Code: Select all

i915.modeset=0
to the bootline help?

Thanks for the quick reply, but unfortunately that didn't help :(

I did read somewhere that the xf86-video-intel drivers after 2.9 required KMS to work - and I think it's 2.11.0 that's included with this version of minimyth.

I guess I could try and use an older version of the xf86-video-intel drivers, but I've no idea how I'd go about doing that!

If it would help, then I can upload a test build with the 2.9.1 driver.

You can find it here. Please let me know whether or not it fixes the problem.

Thanks!

That seems to have done the trick.

Now, it appears I need some more RAM... (as the front end bombs out right away!)

Turns out the 512 Mb stick that I thought was in the box is actually only 128 Mb - whoops!

Thanks again,

Ed
