Booting 0.24.1-78 from USB - SYSLINUX probs

Post by Smiley Dan » Tue Dec 20, 2011 6:48 pm

After a long time using an older version using USB I'm trying to re-install the latest.

Installation seems to be fine:

Code: Select all

gravelld@gravelld-laptop:~/minimyth$ sudo ./mm_local_install minimyth/ sdb file:/home/gravelld/Desktop/
ln: creating symbolic link `mm_local_helper_old': File exists
info: mm_local_helper_old: fetching file 'file:/home/gravelld/Desktop//helper.tar.bz2'.

Making a bootable flash device based on the following information:
    Flash device : /dev/sdb
    Flash device vendor :
Flash device model : USB DISK 2.0
    MiniMyth configuration directory: minimyth//conf
    MiniMyth distribution URL : file:/home/gravelld/Desktop/
    MiniMyth version : 0.24.1-78
Continue [y/N]? y

info: mm_local_helper_new: fetching file 'file:/home/gravelld/Desktop//ram-minimyth-0.24.1-78.tar.bz2.md5'.
info: mm_local_helper_new: fetching file 'file:/home/gravelld/Desktop//ram-minimyth-0.24.1-78.tar.bz2'.
umount: /dev/sdb: not mounted
mkfs.msdos 3.0.7 (24 Dec 2009)
MiniMyth install was successful.
But when I boot:

Code: Select all

SYSLINUX 3.63 ....
Unknown keyword in configuration file.
boot:
My syslinux.cfg is:

Code: Select all

DEFAULT minimyth

LABEL minimyth
	KERNEL kernel
	APPEND ro root=/dev/ram0 ramdisk_size=96000 initrd=rootfs
If I remove the contents I don't get the error message, but obviously it doesn't boot :D

The frustrating thing is, ISTR having to do something special last time with regards this file to make it boot automatically.

Is there something wrong with the syslinux.cfg file?

I tried a different USB key and this gave 'Boot error' instead.

I can't use the key that it used to work on because it's only 128MB and it appears MM has gone over that now. Perhaps there's a way of not including all the themes?

md5sums of the kernel and rootfs files come out the same.

Gah, I found the cause! I knew I'd done this before... I dug through some old documentation I'd written myself and found the solution.

It turns out that my box, an Epia SP800E, has an Award BIOS that suffers from the no-boot-from-USB-HDD bug. The fix is to put the USB key into ZIPDrive mode. See http://www.syslinux.org/doc/usbkey.txt

So it's booting now...

I am glad you tracked down and fixed the problem. I no longer have any VIA products (due to their lack of ongoing Linux support), so I would not have been able to locate the problem.
MiniMyth running on an Acer ApireRevo 3610 and a Zotac ZBOX-ID80-U. Find out more at my MythTV page.
