USB-memory

Post by trycoon » Wed Jan 14, 2004 9:59 am

Hi!

Has anyone had any success with booting from an USB-pocket memory(flashcard)?? Looks like a nice solution, small, quiet, and does'nt produce any heat.

I havent tried booting MiniMyth from an USB-flash-memory, but I did try it with freevix. It is comparable, and it takes forever.. really... I have an Apacher USB 2.0 flash disk, and it took me 15 minutes to boot...

Honestly, I think your best bet is pxe (boot from lan). My rootfs is 8mb or so, and I mount my 50mb /usr using NFS, so my total boot time is really low.

You can setup lan booting and NFS fairly easily. I run mine from my always-on mythtv backend.

Not sure. The busybox I built does have insmod, though I renamed it insmod.bb and replaced it with Mandrake's isnmod as busybox's wouldn't play nice with the modules Via sent me.

Just curious, why did you build busybox yourself?

PXEbooting

Post by trycoon » Thu Feb 12, 2004 12:59 am

Well, i'm allready running PXElinux and booting over the network for one of my machines and it's working great! But this machine is going to be a MAME-box without any network connection so network booting would not work. That's why i'm trying to boot from a USB-memory, even though it's slower..
